“Silent. Precise. Deadly. The Nagastra-2 isn’t just another drone. It’s India’s latest Indigenous (Desi) Answer to modern armoured warfare.” 🇮🇳🚀
In another major boost to India’s growing defence self-reliance, Nagpur-based Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd. has commenced deliveries of the advanced Nagastra-2 loitering munition system to the Indian Army.
The induction marks a significant step in the Army’s modernisation drive and reflects the increasing maturity of India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem. Designed to locate, track and destroy heavily protected enemy assets, the Nagastra-2 combines precision, endurance and battlefield survivability in a single combat platform.
A Tank Hunter Built for Modern Warfare
At the heart of the Nagastra-2 is a powerful 4 kg tandem shaped-charge warhead capable of penetrating up to 650 mm of Rolled Homogeneous Armour (RHA). This gives the system the ability to neutralise modern armoured vehicles and fortified positions with devastating accuracy.
Unlike conventional munitions, the loitering drone can remain airborne for up to 60 minutes, continuously scanning the battlefield through its day-and-night surveillance sensors before striking its target at the optimal moment.
Long Reach, Smart Flexibility
The system offers a direct engagement range of 50 kilometres in its fire-and-forget attack mode, enabling troops to eliminate threats from a safe stand-off distance.
However, one of its most valuable capabilities is operational flexibility. If no suitable target is identified, Nagastra-2 can shift into a recoverable mission profile and operate within a 25-kilometre radius, allowing the drone to be retrieved and reused rather than sacrificed unnecessarily.
This dual-mode capability enhances battlefield efficiency while reducing operational costs.
Engineered to Survive Electronic Warfare
Modern conflict zones are increasingly dominated by electronic warfare, where communication links and navigation signals are routinely targeted.
Recognising this challenge, the Nagastra-2 has been equipped with advanced Electronic Counter-Countermeasures (ECCM) technology. The system is specifically designed to resist jamming and spoofing attempts against its GPS and communication networks, ensuring mission reliability even in heavily contested electromagnetic environments.
Battle-Proven Before Induction
Before entering service, the drone underwent extensive user evaluation trials at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in August 2026.
During the testing phase, the Indian Army successfully validated all critical operational parameters, including strike accuracy, endurance, system reliability and resistance to electronic interference. The successful completion of these trials paved the way for its induction into frontline service.
Building on the Success of Nagastra-1R
The latest acquisition is a continuation of the Army’s growing confidence in indigenous loitering munition technology.
In 2025, the Indian Army had already placed orders for approximately 450 units of the Nagastra-1R, an earlier variant developed by Solar Defence and Aerospace.
The Nagastra-1R earned recognition for its affordability, recoverable design, secure encrypted communications and exceptional targeting precision within a two-metre radius. Equipped with a 360-degree gimbal camera and optional thermal imaging payloads, it proved its effectiveness across diverse operational environments ranging from the high-altitude regions of Ladakh to the plains of Babina.
The Bigger Picture
The induction of Nagastra-2 is more than the arrival of a new weapon system. It is a reflection of India’s accelerating journey towards self-reliance in defence technology.
With over 80 percent indigenous content, advanced anti-armour capability, electronic warfare resilience and flexible mission profiles, Nagastra-2 represents the new face of Indian military innovation, designed, developed and delivered in India for the battlefields of the future.
As the character of warfare evolves, India’s home-grown kamikaze drones are emerging as force multipliers capable of delivering precision, reach and deterrence in a rapidly changing strategic landscape
